Graphic alcohol packaging could help curb alcohol consumption

Ross and Russel

Graphic labels on alcohol packaging, similar to those on cigarette packs, may help curb alcohol consumption.

In a recent study, Cancer Council Victoria found using images of a mutating cancerous cells had more of an impact on drinkers than more subtle warnings about what booze is doing to the body.

Cancer Council Victoria chief executive, Todd Harper had told 3AW’s Justin and Kate says while plain packaging isn’t the end goal, some studies have suggested stronger warning labels may be effective.

‘I think the issues in the past, that have sometimes been raised with alcohol, is ‘should we have health warnings or health information labelling on alcohol products?’ Mr Harper said on 3AW Breakfast.

‘Other studys have shown that that may be helpful, particularly when people buy alcohol and when they consume alcohol.’
