Hawthorn has overcome a second-half fightback to win a thriller by three points.

The Hawks led by as much as 35 points before the Dees sparked into gear.

Former Hawk Jordan Lewis kicked a late goal to set up a very tense finish, but the Hawks managed to hold on.

3AW expert Cameron Ling praised the Hawks’ veterans.

‘Jarryd Roughead and Shaun Burgoyne – those champs were the ones who stood up today,’ Lingy said.

Hawthorn has made a fast start and leads by 29 points.

The Hawks have had 15 scores to Melbourne’s six.

However, a knee injury to Grant Birchall has given them some cause for concern.

3AW analyst Cameron Ling said he’s ‘bitterly disappointed’ with the Demons.

‘This is the team we think is moving up the ladder, but they’ve made Hawthorn look like the premiership team of a couple of years ago,’ Lingy said.

Hawthorn has made a change before the game.

Jaeger O’Meara (knee soreness) is out, with Will Langford coming in.

Melbourne will go in unchanged.

=====

Hawthorn’s season hangs in the balance as they tackle Melbourne in a must-win game at the ‘G.

Embarrassed last week by St Kilda, the Hawks are under the pump to bounce back against the Dees.

But former Hawk Jordan Lewis will be keen to show his old side they made a mistake in letting him go as he faces the side he won four flags with for the first time.
