Murals above shop fronts in Balaclava will be immediately removed after heavy community backlash, a City of Port Phillip councillor has said.

The series of murals on Carlisle Street were commissioned by the local council, with artist Michael Porter’s worked slammed for depicting anti-semitic stereotypes of Jewish men.

City of Port Phillip Marcus Pearl confirmed the process to remove the “deeply offensive” murals began on Friday afternoon.

“I’ve received a significant amount of complaints from members of our community who find these murals deeply offensive,” he told Tom Elliott on 3AW Drive.

“It’s confronting at best and deeply disturbing to many people in our community. I deeply apologise for that.”
