The staggering annual spend to keep Australia’s roads in their current condition
It will take $1 billion in federal funding per year to keep Australia’s roads in the condition they’re currently in, according to research by the Grattan Institute, an independent thinktank.
Transport and cities program director at the Grattan Institute, Marion Terrill, says the federal government spent $10 billion on roads last year, but most of the spend was on new major projects not maintaining existing roads.
“The problem with that is you brew up a problem for later,” she told Ross and Russel.
