Thousands of patients at The Alfred have had their medical records accessed in a massive security breach and the hospital’s CEO admits he “can’t guarantee” there aren’t other ongoing data breaches the hospital is currently unaware of.

More than 7000 medical records — including test results, clinicians notes, names, dates of birth and Medicare numbers — have been compromised.

Chief executive of The Alfred, Professor Andrew Way, told Neil Mitchell a pharmacist accessed the records without authorisation over a four-year period.

“It’s terrible, it shouldn’t have happened, we should have been able to pick this up earlier and we’re putting in processes to improve the likelihood of that happening, but … we can’t guarantee it’s not happening, but we are so much more sensitive to this issue today than we have been in the past” he said.

The pharmacist in question claims they accessed the records because they were “curious”. They no longer work for Alfred Health.
