Two questions Neil Mitchell has after a spate of concerning crashes
A series of alarming crashes on Victoria’s roads in a 24-hour period have prompted Neil Mitchell to question whether more needs to be done to address two problems — ageing drivers, and underage drivers travelling at speed in stolen vehicles.

Last night, an 81-year-old struck a pedestrian in Mitcham, leaving the 65-year-old victim with life-threatening injuries. In a separate incident, an 82-year-old crashed his car into Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre.
Neil Mitchell asked acting commissioner for road policing Martin O’Brien if he’s concerned about older drivers as the population ages.
He said while the impact isn’t statistically significant, there “is absolute need to be constantly looking at the age of drivers … and how they affect the ability to drive”.
In another incident in the early hours of this morning, a stolen car collided into another vehicle in Epping. A 16-year-old female and a 13-year-old male have been taken to hospital under police guard, and two other people are believed to have run from the stolen car.
Acting commissioner O’Brien said the spate of underage reckless driving is “frustrating”, and we “won’t police our way out if these issues”.
