The first train took to the tracks inside the Metro Tunnel this morning ahead of the tunnel opening in 2025.

Daniel Bowen from the Public Transport Users Association says the tunnel is a “genuinely exciting” infrastructure project and it’ll result in a “real time saving” for some passengers.

But he says there’s a “question mark” over the frequency of services.

“Make it that turn up and go service, where any time you’re travelling you can rely on a train within a few minutes. That’s what’s really going to make it a game changer for Melbourne,” he told Tony Jones, filling in for Neil Mitchell.
