Legendary broadcaster Bruce McAvaney has labelled the state government’s shock announcement to scrap the 2026 Commonwealth Games as an “embarassment”.

McAvaney claims the Games now face a “huge challenge” and fears it could be the end of the Games altogether.

“It’s a big shock Neil, I didn’t see it coming,” McAvaney told Neil Mitchell.

He also spoke on the upcoming women’s World Cup set to kick off Thursday night when the Matildas face the Republic of Ireland in Sydney in front of a sold out crowd.
