A senior partner at the law firm which ran the successful robodebt class action says the scandal is “Australia’s Watergate” and people could end up in jail.

Senior partner at Gordon Legal, Peter Gordon, told Neil Mitchell the damning Robodebt Royal Commission report “has exposed systemic dishonesty right throughout the highest levels of government that was ongoing for years”.

Mr Gordon says there could be criminal charges laid over the scheme.

NEIL MITCHELL: “Is there a possibility, as happened with Watergate, that people could go to jail?”

PETER GORDON: “Well I’ll simply repeat to you that there is a Commonwealth Act of Parliament that makes it an offence for a public official to misuse their powers to harm someone dishonestly.”

Mr Gordon is calling on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to reconvene the class action, and hopes this will end in compensation for those most significantly harmed by robodebt.
