Former Victorian deputy premier James Merlino has been appointed chair of the Suburban Rail Loop Authority.

A Victorian government spokesperson says Mr Merlino has extensive experience in infrastructure construction.

“[He] is expertly placed to lead the authority into the next phase of project delivery,” they said.
