For the first time in Australia, research conducted by Deakin University has found a link between ultra-processed foods and depression.

The study was published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, and led by Dr Melissa Lane from Deakin’s Food and Mood Centre, who found the risk of depression was higher in those with diets of more than 30 per cent ultra-processed food.

“That was just a really interesting finding that there appears to be this kind of threshold where the increased risk for depression jumps up,” Dr Lane told 3AW Breakfast.
