A fire has broken out at a New Zealand hostel, claiming the lives of at least six people.

The blaze occurred at the Loafers Lodge hostel in Wellington at 12:30am local time overnight.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins confirmed the death toll and claimed the toll is likely to rise.
