Controversial bike lanes in some of Melbourne’s inner suburbs are set to be ripped out.

Pop-up bike lanes on council managed roads in St Kilda, Port Melbourne and surrounding suburbs, which were introduced as part of a trial, will be wound back in coming months.

Port Phillip Councillor Andrew Bond says the council and Department of Transport are “jointly putting our hands up and saying we got it wrong and it’s time to remove this infrastructure”.

“The feedback I received from our residents is that the infrastructure that was installed created more problems than it solved.”

Bike lanes and infrastructure on roads which are managed by the state will not be removed.
