Melbourne council promotes ‘street art’ classes for kids as young as 10
Melbourne City Council is promoting a children’s holiday program which encourages children as young as 10 to spray paint.
The freehand street art holiday workshop run by Blender Studios is featured on the council’s website, and Tony Jones, who is filling in for Neil Mitchell, is concerned about the message it sends.
“My issue with this is you’ve got a 10-year-old that goes … when the workshop finishes what does that child then do in terms of pursuing that new interest, that new hobby?,” he said.
But Blender Studios owner Adrian Doyle denies the workshop encourages vandalism.
“We bring them down to our laneway at Blender Studios, our laneway is very beautiful — it’s really well curated — so kids learn straight away that they can’t just paint over artwork, they can’t just trash things.”
