A study by residential property group Longview has found most Australian landlords would have been better off investing in superannuation instead of a property.

The study’s results found between 1990 and 2020, the average return for property investments was 6.7 per cent, whilst the return in super was 7.4 per cent.

Co-founder of Longview, Evan Thornley, believes the rental system needs to change to benefit both landlords and tenants.

“What our paper says is the system’s not working for either,” Mr Thornley told Neil Mitchell.

“We need to change the system, so that people can invest in property without all of their needs impacting the lives of people who live in the property on a daily basis, and then we’ll get a better system for landlords and for tenants.”
