A 177-year-old time capsule will be opened at the Royal Melbourne Hospital today.

The capsule was first buried in 1846 at the corner of Lonsdale and Swanston streets when the hospital’s first foundation stone was laid.

It’ll be opened today at the hospital’s 175 year celebration and pandemic documentation, a COVID-19 pin, a clot retrieval device and the hospital’s reconciliation plan will be added.

Also in the time capsule are six coins from pre-1846, newspaper cuttings and the RMH Annual Report from 1940-41, architectural plans for the hospital, and documents from the hospital’s 160th anniversary celebration.

The time capsule was last opened in 2010 and is next set to be opened at the hospital’s 200th anniversary celebration in 2047.
