Police are calling for information after a woman was struck to the face and pushed to the ground on a walking trail in Melbourne’s north-west.

The woman was walking along the Maribyrnong River Trail near Canning Reserve when an unknown man approached her from behind and pushed her to the ground at about midday on February 8.

The victim looked up and was struck in the face by the unknown man, who then reached into her pockets.

The woman screamed and pushed the man away.

He was last seen running along the river trail away from Canning Reserve.

The woman sustained minor injuries to her face and legs in the attack.

Police have released a computer generated image of a man they want to speak to over the attempted robbery.
