It’s been a restless night north-east of Melbourne, with a bushfire that threatened properties yet to be declared under control.

Three water bombing helicopters and several fire crews spent Wednesday night battling the blaze at Maintongoon near Bonnie Doon.

Keren Southgate owns the Omaroo High Country Retreat and told Neil Mitchell she slept in one-hour blokes, with her 98-year-old mother quite anxious about the situation.

An emergency warning was issued shortly before 8pm on Wednesday night, with residents at several properties in the path of the fire advised to evacuate.

The fire is not yet under control, but the emergency warning has been downgraded to a watch and act notice for Maintongoon, Bonnie Doon, Fawcett and Woodfield.

People in those areas are advised leaving now is the safest option.
