But the Australian dairy industry has been bolstered by huge overseas demand.
United Dairy Farmers of Victoria president and Colac dairy farmer Mark Billing says while the growth of plant-based milk alternatives has cut domestic milk consumption, the Australian market is well-positioned internationally.

“We’ve got a pretty strong market into China and most of Asia, in fact. Our product is sought after, we’ve got a very strong market into Japan for cheese,” he told Ross and Russel.
“Dairy milk is such a nutritious product, it’s hard to replace.”
