A man is under police guard in hospital and a police dog has been injured after a pursuit ended in a crash in Melbourne’s west.

Officers in an unmarked police car witnessed the offending vehicle crossing onto the wrong side of the road and colliding with a passing vehicle before heading towards Derrimut Road in Werribee at about 9pm last night.

They chased the car to a shopping centre carpark, where the offender has hit two parked cars and the dog squad vehicle.

A police dog suffered facial and leg injuries in the crash.

A 35-year-old Maidstone man was arrested on foot and remains under police guard in hospital this morning.
