There are concerns Victoria may face “pretty dangerous” grass fires in coming months.

The unusually wet weather has reduced the bushfire risk, but it has also led to more rapid grass growth than usual.

Now that the weather is heating up, Associate Professor in Fire Ecology and Management at the University of Melbourne, Dr Kevin Tolhurst, warns there could be some “pretty dangerous grass fires this coming season”.

“The thing about grass fires is the fires can move quite quickly so people can be caught unawares,” he told Heidi Murphy, filling in for Tom Elliott.

Dr Tolhust says February and March will be the highest-risk period for grass fires.
