Andrew Gee has sensationally quit the National Party to run as an Independent MP.

The member for Calare in NSW says a disagreement on policy including the Indigenous Voice to parliament is behind his decision.

In a lengthy statement on his Facebook page, he says the National Party of today is “very different to the one of his youth”.

He has previously spoken out in support of the Indigenous Voice to parliament, breaking ranks with many of his Nationals colleagues.

“I can’t reconcile the fact that every Australian will get a free vote on the vitally important issue of the Voice, yet National Party MPs are expected to fall into line behind a party position that I fundamentally disagree with, and vote accordingly in Parliament,” he wrote.

“While I respect the views of my colleagues, this just isn’t right.”
