There are calls for the Victorian Certificate of Education to be overhauled, with claims it’s not helping students transition into the real world.

Dr Paul Kidson, senior lecturer of educational leadership at the Australian Catholic University, said a lot had changed in the way people learn in the 30 years since VCE was introduced in replacement of the HCE.

“Anything that is that old is worthy of continual renewal and refreshment to ask the question whether it’s still fit for purpose,” he said on 3AW Drive.

The importance placed on exams has been heavily criticised in recent years, but Dr Kidson said they shouldn’t be done away with completely.

“We don’t want our young people to be able to think just because something is hard, I’ll walk away from it because it’s unfair, or unjust,” he said.

“We need to develop perseverance and patience.”
