The Australian National Dictionary Centre has today announced its word of the year.

It’s “teal”.

Formerly only used to describe a blue-green colour, teal has taken on another meaning in Australia. It’s now used to describe an independent political candidate or politician who campaigns on climate change and greater parliamentary integrity.

Editor at the Australian National Dictionary Centre at the ANU, Mark Gwynn, says the word “cooker” was also considered by the Australian National Dictionary Centre.

“It’s a derogatory word for the people who were protesting against the vaccine mandates and lockdowns,” he told Ross and Russel.
