Detectives are appealing for assistance after a man was shot in a burglary gone wrong in Melbourne’s west.

A group of men were attempting to break into a property in Maxweld Street, Ardeer at about 1.30am on October 25 when they were confronted by a man from a nearby house.

Two shots were fired at the 59-year-old resident, with one impacting his face and causing eye damage.

The victim was hospitalised with serious eye injuries.

The offenders fled in two dark-coloured hatchbacks and a red compact SUV. Police have today released CCTV of the cars they believe may have been involved.
