Both major parties have promised tens of billions of dollars of expenditure ahead of the upcoming state election, despite Victoria being in an incredibly weak financial position.

Professor David Hayward, Emeritus Professor of Public Policy and the Social Economy at RMIT, spoke to Ross and Russel about these overwhelming costs.

“There’s a lot of promises in there… and it amounts to quite a lot of money,” he said.

Press PLAY to hear whether our state government will be able to keep their promises.

Professor Hayward was especially skeptical about the cost of opening new hospitals.

Not only do these facilities need to be built, but money also needs to be allocated to their ongoing operation, he said.

“With so many hospitals being promised… where will the money come from to operate them?”
