The Yarra Ranges has lost $410 million in desperately needed federal funding to fix roads, Liberal MP for La Trobe Jason Wood claims.

The federal government cut $110 million intended for a Wellington Road upgrade in the area in the recent budget.

In addition, Mr Wood says the federal government has reneged on a $300 million promise to seal roads in the region — a project known as ‘Sealing the Hills’.

“We’re talking about nearly 300 kilometres of roads to be sealed,” he told Neil Mitchell.

Mr Wood blasted the decision to pull funding from the Wellington Road upgrade, which he says is “pretty much a deadly broken promise” because the road is the major escape route for Cockatoo, Gembrook and Emerald if there’s a fire.

“It’s single lane each direction and if you had people need to evacuate on one road and there’s a car collision, people get trapped,” he said.
