The children of a navy veteran seriously injured in a motorcycle crash in Vietnam are pleading for help to get their dad back to Australia for medical treatment.

Australian man Greg, who had recently moved to Vietnam to live, was on a motorcycle when it collided head-on with another bike. He underwent a 16-hour surgery in Ho Chi Minh to alleviate bleeding on his brain.

With a grim prognosis, the veteran’s two children — Dylan and Michiko — travelled to Vietnam to be by his bedside, but the pair don’t speak or read Vietnamese so are struggling with miscommunication and are signing documents they don’t understand.

Greg’s condition has improved, but since being hospitalised he has contracted pneumonia and meningitis, prompting his family to plead for the Australian government to facilitate a medical evacuation.

“The support has been somewhat inadequate from any of the consulates we’ve approached … in terms of trying to get translators to help us out at the hospital and also in terms of how to get him back to Australia,” Greg’s son Dylan said.

“Unfortunately the only way we’re able to get dad back to Australia to finish off the remainder of his surgery is to pay an upfront cost of $45,000 to get a medevac, which isn’t something we have the resources for.”

The family has started a GoFundMe to cover Greg’s mounting medical bills.
