Melbourne scientists testing new Alzheimer’s treatment
Victorian scientists are investigating if a non-invasive procedure could bring lasting changes to brain cells and fight memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease.
The Bionics Institute in East Melbourne is planning to recruit 100 Victorians to study whether Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) can improve memory loss.
TMS has been used to treat depression for decades.
“Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a non0invasivce form of brain simulation which uses really strong magnetic pulses … which pass freely into the brain and induce an electrical current and that causes brain cells to fire,” head of cognitive disorders treatment program at the Bionics Institute, Professor Kate Hoy, told Ross and Russel.
Anyone who wants to take part in the trial is advised to go to bionicsinstitute.org.
