Head of Racing Victoria’s commentary team and iconic broadcaster, Matt Hill, has explained his preparation for calling the Melbourne Cup, claiming his suspected photographic memory assists him with the call.

The caller admits he can walk into a room and recognise someone even after only briefly meeting them previously, and it’s similar with calling horse races and learning the colours of the jockeys.

“I think it is a photographic memory for sure,” Mr Hill told Tony Jones, filling in for Neil Mitchell.
