Rivers have been hit hard in recent times with the floods around the state, with the Yarra River also containing high levels of litter.

Yarra River Keeper, Charlotte Sterrett, spoke to Neil Mitchell on why the Yarra is building up with litter and what can be done to fix it.

“Every time we drop a piece of litter, whether it’s a plastic bottle, a lid or packaging, Melbourne is one big drain and it’s going to end up in the river if it’s not collected at the source, so we need more litter traps to collect the litter along the way,” Ms Sterrett said.

“We want it to be swimmable for everybody, not just for people but the environment in general.”
