Hundreds of homes ‘essentially being sacrificed’ as Echuca builds ‘great wall’
Echuca residents on the wrong side of an emergency levee bank say they’ve been left in the dark by authorities.
A soil wall almost three kilometres long and two metres high — dubbed the ‘great wall of Echuca’ — has been constructed by workers and locals in a bid to protect the town centre from floodwaters.
Former police officer Gerard Ryan told Neil Mitchell his home now looked all but certain to flood because of the wall.

He said he was more than happy to be a sacrificial lamb for the “greater good” but said there was no consultation.
“We were given 15 minutes notice,” he said.
Mr Ryan said the wall should have been built “years ago” to protect the community.
Today reporter Izabella Staskowski, who is in the flood zone, told 3AW Breakfast there were a “couple of hundred” homes in a similar position.
“They got told without much consultation that ‘sorry we’re building a levee’ and that essentially is going to push more water into their homes,” she said.
“They’re saying that they understand why the levee is being built … but they just wish somebody would have spoken to them, would have asked them how they felt about it.”
