The number of Australian Defence Force personnel on the ground providing flood assistance will double to 400 in the coming days in Victoria.

Two additional Chinook helicopters are also being deployed to help isolated communities.

ADF Brigadier Matt Burr says personnel have been focusing their efforts on Shepparton, Mooroopna, Echuca, Rochester and Seymour.

More rain is threatening to exacerbate the flood crisis, with thunderstorms expected in the north of the state from Thursday.

In Echuca, a two-metre wall has been constructed in a desperate effort to protect the town’s centre from floodwaters.

Evacuation warnings are in place for Echuca and Echuca Village, Barmah and Lower Moira, Bunbartha, Kaarimba, Mundoona, Zeerust, Loddon River (Loddon Weir to Kerang), Rochester, Campaspe River (downstream of Rochester), Shepparton, Kiala West, Mooroopna, Orrvale, Murchison and Murchison East.
