What sparked the airport terminal evacuation on Tuesday

A passenger who turned around suddenly and passed back through security doors at Melbourne Airport on Tuesday morning sparked the evacuation of Terminal 1.

All passengers in the terminal — and one flight that had boarded but not yet taken off — were evacuated and had to be rescreened by security, and Qantas operations were halted.

Group executive of corporate affairs at Qantas, Andrew McGinnes, says the passenger was “none the wiser” when he was found at an airport coffee shop.

The security door was not directly manned by security, so the man was not immediately apprehended, but an alarm was triggered, forcing the evacuation of the terminal while the passenger was tracked down.

Mr McGinnes said the airline needs “the cooperation of passengers to do the right thing”.
