Victoria is bracing for another onslaught of heavy rain and the availability and price of food products is expected to surge as a result.

An expected 10 to 20 millimetres of rain is forecast to fall in western Victoria on Wednesday, with another 20 to 50 millimetres forecast across the state on Thursday.

Ten flood watch warnings are already in place for rivers across the state.

Victorian Farmers Federation Chair Emma Germano says says there’s “no more capacity for soil to absorb this water that’s coming through”.

“We’re getting to the point now where farmers can’t get onto their land to manage crops,” she told Neil Mitchell.

Ms Germano says there will be shortages of some locally-grown fruit and vegetables as a result of the wet weather, and the price of meat may also increase.

“We’ve got things like processing tomatoes, they just simply can’t get onto the ground to plant them, so that’s problematic,” she said.

“That really wet kind of humid, soggy stuff just doesn’t enable any of our crops to grow.”
