Queen Victoria Market to ban Indigenous fakes
Queen Victoria Market will ban the sale of inauthentic Indigenous products.
Items like foreign-made boomerangs and imitation Aboriginal artwork will be phased out next July, with the market working to ensure all Indigenous products sold are verified as coming from Aboriginal creators or licensed arrangements.
Queen Victoria Market CEO Stan Liacos says it’s an overdue change.
“It’s the right thing to do,” he told Ross and Russel.
“The federal government is intending to legislate on this matter next year and what we want to do is get ahead of that positive change.”
Mr Liacos says “10 or 20” traders currently sell inauthentic Aboriginal products at the market.
