Groundbreaking new Alzheimer’s treatment could be available next year
A new Alzheimer’s drug is causing a “buzz” around the globe could be available in Australia as early as next year.
Third-phase clinical trials of the drug Lecanemab have shown the drug clears plaques believed to cause Alzheimer’s disease and slows down the rate of cognitive decline by 27 per cent.
Director of the Australian Dementia Network, Professor Christopher Rowe, says the drug is a game-changer.
“This is the first drug that actually slows the progression of Alzheimer’s disease,” he told Ross and Russel.
“Only three per cent of people had any symptoms or side effects from the drug.”
The drug is now being trialled on people with amyloid plaques but who do not yet have any symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.
Final data on the drug trials will be released next month.
