Mornington Peninsula ‘death traps’ putting pedestrians at risk

A Mornington Peninsula councillor says shocking “death traps” are putting residents, including children, at risk.

More than 100 new footpaths are needed on the Mornington Peninsula and Councillor Susan Bissinger says there are seven or eight roads which are “death traps” for pedestrians.

In one case, Councillor Bissinger says people making their way to a playground are forced to walk on the road alongside traffic travelling at 60km/h, as there’s no footpath and no road shoulder.

“At the Point Nepean Road end of St Pauls Road … there’s a child’s playground,” she told Neil Mitchell.

“You can imagine all the people and residents filtering into St Pauls Road, then they walk down St Pauls Road, cross Point Nepean Road to get to the playground with their children.

“There is not only no footpath, there is no road shoulder, so these people with their kids and pets, and goodness knows what else, are having to walk in amongst traffic, and the traffic is 60 or 70km/h.

“We’re not even asking for proper concrete footpaths. Just clear us some vegetation. Just give people somewhere to walk.”

The council will tonight consider revealing its top 20 footpath projects and review how work is prioritised.
