A police officer and dog have been injured during the arrest of a man breaking into cars.

The Dog Squad was called in on Sunday morning after reports of a man breaking into vehicles in Cranbourne South.

An officer and dog named Duke approached the man and after a short struggle, where the officer was allegedly hit in the head, the police dog was deployed, biting the offender on the leg.

The 35-year-old drove off, dragging Duke alongside the car as he was still attached the man’s leg.

The car was found burnt out in Lang Lang a short time later.

The man will face court today in charges relating to assaulting police.

Charges related to injuries sustained by police dog Duke are expected to be laid at a later date.
