‘Distressing’ stuff-up leaves a Geelong household unknowingly drinking recycled water
A Geelong household has unknowingly been drinking recycled water after a plumbing bungle.
A property in Armstrong Creek, which is fitted with recycled water for use in the garden and toilet, as well as drinking water, had the plumbing for the two lines crossed.
Managing director of Barwon Water, Tracey Slatter, says a failure notice had been issued for the property, and it’s still in place, but residents were somehow permitted to move in anyway.
“It’s a very unfortunate and distressing situation for this customer,” she told Neil Mitchell.
“We’ve referred this to the Victorian Building Authority because it’s a very serious situation.”
The recycled water flowing into the house had been treated using UV filtration and disinfected with chlorine, but had not been treated to drinking water standard.
