Walter Mikac was this week’s guest on What Makes You Tick?

Walter Mikac lost his daughters, Alannah and Madeline, and wife, Nanette, in the Port Arthur massacre in 1996.

It’s the deadliest mass shooting in Australia’s history.

The tragedy led Mr Mikac to create the Alannah and Madeline Foundation in his daughters’ memory, an organisation which aids children affected by violence and bullying.

The foundation offered Mr Mikac something to focus on at a time of immense grief.

“I think I pride myself on being a pretty hard-working and pretty industrious sort of a person,” he told Neil Mitchell on 3AW Mornings.

“And you’ve been doing that all your life, and then all of a sudden it’s ripped away.

“It was a massive void.”
