The Victorian Liberals are wanting to rewrite the school curriculum with a greater emphasis on Maths, Science and Literacy.

It comes after the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) found 1 in 5 Australian students are below the level of functional literacy.

Education director Jordana Hunter agrees the curriculum does need to be looked at following the PISA results and offered some suggestions on how the education system can improve.

“Those PISA results paint a pretty sobering picture for Australia,” she told Tom Elliott.

“We’ve gotten very good at adding to the curriculum but we haven’t spent as much time thinking about how to make the curriculum achievable in the time that teachers actually have with students.”

“We need to identify the students that are falling behind and support them to catch up as quickly as possible.”
