Rate rise may be needed to pay for new purple bin

Purple bins will be rolled out across every Victorian household over the next five years, the state government has announced.

The bin will be reserved for glass waste.

They are already being used by some councils, including Whittlesea Council.

However, CEO of Whittlesea Council, Craig Lloyd, said rate rises to pay for the new bin “would be a matter for each council”.

“Everyone’s got different collection arrangements, and different disposal arrangements,” he told Neil Mitchell on 3AW Mornings.

“Where we’re pleased is the glass-to-glass arrangement we have keeps the value in the glass, and that obviously offsets the charges that we need to charge the community.”

Dr Trevor Thornton, lecturer at Deakin University school of life and environmental sciences, told 3AW Breakfast there’s a good reason for adding the purple bin.

“It’s a good idea to try and get the glass out of the normal recycling bin,” he said.

“Funnily enough when that glass breaks in that bin it contaminates the paper and cardboard and plastics which makes them non-recyclable.”
