The case FOR the Suburban Rail Loop (and why ‘nobody knows’ what it will cost)
It’s been revealed the first two sections of the much-publicised Suburban Rail Loop project will cost more than double what the government said the entire project would cost.
The first two sections of the 90km loop will cost $125 billion alone, according to the Parliamentary Budget Office.
Graham Currie, Professor of Public Transport at Monash University, said it was hard to know how accurate that cost prediction would be.
“As you can see from these estimates, they are wildly varying,” he told Neil Mitchell.
“It’s certainly a very expensive project.”
But he is adamant the project is crucial to Melbourne’s future.
