The City of Melbourne has rejected a motion demanding the “urgent” release of a report into safe injecting rooms.

The council voted down the motion six to three at the Future Melbourne Committee meeting on Tuesday night.

It’s been replaced by a Greens councillor proposal to “reaffirm” the city’s support for an injecting room in the CBD.

Lord mayor Sally Capp says while the council wants to see the report as soon as possible, they “want the report to be done properly and thoroughly”.

Councillor Capp says she supports a safe injecting room in the CBD, but she doesn’t think the Degraves Street location floated is the right place for it.

“I do not think a site across from Flinders Street Station is the ideal place for a safe injecting room,” she told Neil Mitchell.

“I think a place that really maximises the health outcomes but minimises impacts on residents, traders, workers and visitors is the best place.”
