‘Male tribal culture’ behind soccer flares: Police Chief
Victoria’s Police Chief blames a ‘male tribal culture’ for the increase in flares at the A-League.
Police Commissioner Graham Ashton told Neil Mitchell a change of demographic in the crowd would change behaviour.
‘When you’ve got a sea of young males filled with testosterone, it can be a recipe for this sort of thing,’ Mr Ashton said on Wednesday.
‘We could look at marketing these games to families and children.’
Mr Ashton also said restricting the sale of flares to minors is ‘something we could look at.’

Meanwhile, a 3AW listener might have solved the A-League’s flare problem with a simple suggestion.
After A-League boss Mr de Bohun said flares should only be for ‘maritime disasters’, caller Marie proposed that a boat licence be required to buy a flare.
However, Simon Dryden of the Ocean Racing Yacht Club of Victoria doesn’t think restricting their sale will achieve anything.
