Outspoken Senator Lidia Thorpe has described the Queen as a “coloniser” while being sworn in to parliament.

The Greens politician was told to repeat the oath of allegiance for Australian parliamentarians because of the comment.

Sandy Biar, National Director of the Australian Republic Movement, told Tom Elliott the Senator shouldn’t have to pledge allegiance to the Queen, just Australians.

“I don’t think it’s as controversial as people are making it out to be,” he said.
