RSPCA defends decision to dig up graves of some 800 pets for development
The RSPCA says it understands why some pet owners are upset by news a pet cemetery on the Mornington Peninsula will be disturbed to make way for a redevelopment, but say they’ve got no choice.
The RSPCA is pushing ahead with plans to redevelop the site, which will result in the removal of about 800 pet graves.
Melisa Quigley buried her dog there 18 years ago and is devastated by the news.
“If there was a human cemetery and they wanted to dig up people and redevelop the land, there would be an outcry from everyone,” she said on 3AW Afternoons.

Dr Liz Walker, Chief Executive of RSPCA Victoria, said she understood the pain, but the extension of the animal shelter cannot be built elsewhere.
“It’s really hard,” she said.
