Four senior Andrews Government ministers to step down
Four senior Andrews Government ministers have announced they’ll step down, in a disruptive blow only months out from the state election.
Deputy Premier James Merlino, Health Minister Martin Foley, Police Minister Lisa Neville and Sports Minister Martin Pakula have announced they’ll step down.
Richard Wynne is also on the way out, a move he flagged late last year.
Mr Merlino has announced he will resign from cabinet and as deputy Labor leader, as he thanked his wife for being the “rock” of the family while he missed out on important milestones.
Health Minister Martin Foley said he would also resign as minister, saying his role has “been an honour”.
Police Minister Lisa Neville will continue as Minister for Police and Minister for Water until Mr Andrews announces a new cabinet.
Mr Pakula “will leave the Ministry as soon as the Premier settles on the team he wishes to take to the election”.
Ben Carroll will become the Minister for Jobs, Precincts and Regions.
Lily D’Ambrosio will be Minister for Environment, Planning, Land and Water.
Natalie Hutchins will become the Minister for Education and Training.
Danny Pearson will become the Minister for Families, Fairness and Housing.
Mary-Anne Thomas will become the Minister for Health.
Daniel Andrews said Jacinta Allan has been recommended as the new deputy leader, but it remains a “matter for caucus”.
