The new measure schools are introducing to catch vaping students

Schools are introducing silent alarms in bathrooms to catch vaping students.

St Bede’s College in Mentone has introduced the technology in a bid to crack down on vaping.

“The sensors actually send a silent alarm which go off to someone’s email or text message, and that allows teachers to move over into the area and ask some questions of students who are in the area at the time,” St Bede’s deputy principal Mark Jones told 3AW Breakfast.

The school decided to install the alarms after Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia director Paul Dillon gave a talk.

“He raised concern that a lot of the vapes contain chemicals that are unknown, very high and dangerous nicotine levels, and as a child safety concern we’ve decided to be a little bit more proactive,” Mr Jones said.

“A number of schools around Victoria are doing this.”
